DON JAZZY FINALLY BREAKS SILENCE ‘My integrity was never damaged
Since his shocking break-up with his erstwhile partner, and co-owner of Mo’ Hits,Dapo Oyebanjo a.k.a D’banj, prolific music producer, Don Jazzy whose real names are Collins Edjereh has maintained sealed lips until last week when he floated a new record label called Mavin Records.
The label parades the brightest and the best acts from the defunct Mo’hits including Wande Coal, Dr Sid, The Prince and the new entrant, Tiwa Savage. In this interview, Don Jazzy reacts to series of rumours and speculations that trailed his over-piblicised break up with D’banj. Members of his new label also share their dreams and expectations as far as Mavin Records is concerned.
What is MAVIN all about and what inspired it?
It is spelt MAVIN Records and not Marvin. If you check the dictionary it simply refers to somebody that is a genius or a champion, a sensation, hotshot, superstar, wizkid or whatever . So basically, we decided to call the company that name because we are all geniuses in our different fields coming together in a record company.
How much would you say the event of the past few weeks have helped in the emergence of Mavin Records.
Basically, we do not believe in channeling our energies towards what has happened in the past. But basically to put up your energy to transform our Ffuture. We wouldn’t say we don’t have the memories of things that has happened but we just pray to God that as we are moving forward that such situations never occur again and we just pray for the best.
What have you been able to put in place to ensure that what happened in the past does not repeat itself?
We can’t really say what happened, we can’t really put a hand on what went wrong so there is nothing one can do. Individually, we will just have to do our best and keep praying that it doesn’t happen again. It’s not that anyone planned it, it happened and it just happened , so we are not in any position to say it’s not going to happen again. Nobody is God?
Do you in any way feel demystified about what happened, because the impression of the people out there is that you are invulnerable, not penetrable?
Demystified! I don’t really get it
(Cut in) There is this notion about Don Jazzy being somebody that is invulnerable, cannot give in, (so to say)?
Demystified? I don’t really think my integrity or my person has been damaged in any way, I believe that once you cannot hide the light, a gold fish has no hiding place. Whatever you are is like time will tell who you are. I can’t really say that people who think that they know who I am know who I am, just like some people that want to assume they know who I am by what they read or what they want to hear.
I’m not in any position to start convincing you or anyone to believe otherwise or believe anything. I just believe that at the end of the day God will vindicate all of us and you will see who we are.
What do you think will change in your transition from MO’HITS to MAVIN?
It has been a moving trend from MO’HITS to MAVIN, the only thing that has changed is the name
From MO’HITS to MAVIN and the addition of new people and basically we will keep moving. So, obviously when you are moving you hope to move from point A to point B so we got to a point we stop we change gas, we refill and we are still going to get to point B at the end of the day.
Are you surprised about the loyalty of Wande Coal, D’Prince and DR. SID.
Am I surprised? No, I don’t see any reason I should be surprised. I’m not surprised , there is no need for me to be surprised just like I have said nothing has changed, we are still the people that we are, we are still ourselves as we dey before, na so we dey, we still dey here , and there is no cause or time to doubt any body’s loyalty.
You have a new addition to the boys, Tiwa Savage, what’s the attraction? Is she the female artiste you have always wanted on board in Mo Hits?
I have been talking about a female artiste for a long time and Tiwa Savage and I have been talking about adding a female artiste to MO’HIT Records for long time now. It’s not that we didn’t know we will end up together at some point. We knew from day one that she came into this country that this is going to happen and because at that point she was not ready.
Obviously, she can’t wait and I have to encourage her to go ahead and make some things for herself and which she did wonderfully as an artiste. Now there is room for an addition and so we will continue from where we left off.
Now let’s talk about MAVIN what is special about it and what are we expecting?
Basically, I will say that we have all seen that situations can change like the way people perceived you, the way people accept your music, the way people talk about you and whatever. So, we know now that we need to do all work harder, gather more momentum to create more music and stuffs so everybody is basically gingered, everybody is more fired up now to work and we don’t see anything stopping us as we are basically just going to put all our energy. Now in MAVIN Records everybody is concentrating on the work and we intend to put out as much as many tracks and albums as possible. Trust me, I’m going to flood the market.
What I thought is perhaps MAVIN will introduce one artiste, one album but you are coming out with a collective album?
It’s not like it’s a group. You can tell everybody here is an individual artiste and successful on his or her own. I must say everybody have at least one to three singles already in the past so we basically just want to bring them out. I didn’t take part in this album I only produced the album. We were like this is Mavin Records everybody, please meet us; this is what we are for now. Individual album is going to follow any moment from now and there is no time to wait at all .
(Cut in) There no single before the release of this album?
No, there is no self formula at the moment so like I said I don’t really like to give people that publicity stunts of he his coming or anticipating. When you see it, you see it, when you see it, you take it.
Will Don Jazzy be a sole artiste on MAVIN Records or an in- house producer and the CEO?
I’m not going to say I’m never going to be an artiste but I don’t see it any time soon.
Who are you looking up to as the cash cow?
Everybody. Basically, the record label is not built in a way one person supposed to be the leader. Everybody is giving equal opportunity to grow and it all depends on how the crowd sees you. People have their opinions about what they like and stuffs like that so how you appeal to your fans will determine how they take you but we intend to put more push and more backing into everybody even the new people that we will add tomorrow.
There were so many insinuations about life in MO’HITS, that life was regimented such that when someone talks others keep quiet, how democratic is MAVIN going to be this time around?
A lot of stuffs that you guys have heard about MO’HIT Records trust me, they are really wrong, but I wouldn’t talk about MO’HIT Records because we are talking about MAVIN Records and moving forward now and I will say we would try as much as possible to communicate a lot of the truth to you guys before people insinuate all sorts of stuff like in the last three months I have seen different kinds of interviews and blogs and whatever that people have written and they say that they spoke to me.
Like I was reading a blog the other day and I saw Exclusive Phone Interview by Don Jazzy bla bla bla and they wrote like a full conversation. The person said this and I said this and that I said this and the truth is I have not had such interview with anyone. I have not spoken to any reporter this year.
Could that be true?
Yes, they are not quoting anybody they were quoting themselves may be they have one imaginary Don Jazzy they were talking to or the other because the Jazzy they quoted is not me, I really do not speak to anybody regarding any situation or any issues, I have not put out any press statement saying whatever on this issue so people just really assumed. They were quoting themselves.
Jazzy what lesson would you say you have learnt from your past experiences that may likely help you in this new movement?
DON: They are not lessons that are new. Change, like they say is the only constant thing in life and I have just confirmed again that really things happen, relationship ends, good things must come to an end they say, one will just try much as possible to see that good things that we have last for long but sometimes they do happen we just pray GOD to help us live as long as possible to see more of the good things than having the good things to end and then because I have already known there is nothing much to say now about that past. Really, my entire mind is focused on moving ahead.
Basically to put up your energy to transform our future. We wouldn’t say we don’t have the memories of things that has happened but we just pray to God that as we are moving forward that such situations never occur again and we just pray for the best.
What have you been able to put in place to ensure that what happened in the past does not repeat itself?

Dance queen, Kaffy set to wed.
For those who think that Kaffy’s life is all about dance, well, this is course for them to have a rethink as the queen of dance plans to walk down the aisle with her lover and father of her baby, Joseph Ameh.
Showtime gathered that the dance queen is presently excited and happy that she would soon dump her single mother status for a life contract as a married woman.
Kaffy will tie the knot with her baby’s father, Joseph come June 2, at Bespoke Centre, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos. Her wedding is taking place exactly six months after she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, Kamal.
The traditional engagement ceremony is scheduled to hold early in the day of the wedding at the same venue.
According to our findings, the wedding will be a strictly-by-invitation affair. But of course; some friends, family and extended family members, colleagues and clients of the entertainment industry are already penned down as guests.
It would be recalled that dancer, Kaffy got pregnant sometime last year. Friends and fans had suspected she was expecting a child and the news spread like wild fire. But Kaffy denied it, claiming it was only rumour.
But months later, she was delivered of a bouncing baby boy on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at County Hospital, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos.

Don Jazzy’s new album without D’Banj – A review
Don Jazzy no doubt is a man who keeps his word; so when he announced yesterday that he would be releasing a compilation album that will hold new works from his Mavins- Tiwa Savage, Dr. Sid, Wande Coal and D’Prince titled Solar Plexus today, this writer has been on the ready and in the coming paragraphs takes a curious yet critical look at this album that comes barely two months after D’banj left the pack to take on the international music market.
Solar Plexus ordinarily means that part of the abdomen including the stomach that is particularly vulnerable to the effects of a blow; so maybe Don jazzy is trying to say this album will literally knock the wind out of you – entertainment wise that is.
The album compilation holds twelve tracks with Tiwa Savage disturbingly doing only one track out of the twelve while Dr Sid, Wande Coal and D’Prince enjoy three each for themselves. This may be due to the fact that she is a recent sign on to the label and the whole compilation had been put together in a rush with Don Jazzy being under intense pressure to be out quickly with his label.
Solar plexus has I’m a Mavin presumably done by all four but then it is difficult to determine when each male Mavin individually takes on the song as the verses had gone the same way both melody and voice- tone wise. Only Tiwa Savage who thankfully is a female had broken the male monotony with her rich, sensual voice. This is noticeably different and perhaps not up to what the Mo’hits all stars had hit us with in 2007
However, the track I am a Mavin exudes a new music sense and style quite unlike what Don Jazzy has ever produced before. Anyone with good music ears and love for perfect harmony will enjoy the number but then if you are inpatient and already quivering to get into a dancing feat then you may be moving on to other tracks.
In Solar Plexus, Tiwa Savage has Oma Ga to her credit, Wande Coal drops See me ri, Forever, and Pretty girls, Dr Sid Yolo, CPR and Chocolate while D’Prince finishes with Take Banana, Why you over there and Amarachi. All four Mavins do their songs individually and independently. They do not jump in to help each other at choruses or bridges save for the Producer himself Don Jazzy who comes in occasional yet expectedly to do vocal backup.
In all, the album is tight. But then there may be moments when the up beat tempo maintained in one track drops considerably in the next track. The sound and production quality is on point but still not ahead of what had been in the Mo’hits era. This album no doubt will have hits that will rock clubs and parties for months to come but then one reality stares really hard in the face – D’banj is sorely missed in this compilation.

Nigeria makes electric car, power bike
As the issue of environmental pollution rages and nations are seeking alternative energy sources devoid of carbon emission, Nigeria, as a major oil-exporter, will be hard hit if nothing is done. To this end, Professor James Omoleye of the Department of Chemical Engineering and former Director, Centre for Research, Covenant University, Ota Ogun State, began a series of researches with his team which culminated in the making of an electric automobile and a power bike. In this chat with Vanguard Learning, Omoleye says Nigeria is far ahead of some nations in this area. Excerpts:
For Professor James Omoleye: “Nigeria is an oil-exporting country and today, the green revolution which is trying to promote mobility without atmospheric pollution, is driving the whole world to look for alternative way of transportation and that has led to some research on electric automobile.
“Electric automobile is not a new thing. In fact, somebody said it was there before fuel combustion engine came but was not efficient at that time. The use of petrol engine took over because it was more efficient. Now, because of pollution and electronic advancement which has made electric automobiles very efficient, there is a kind of shift. People want to look into electric automobile as a means of mobility.”
Reducing pollution by 80 per cent:
If you can reduce the amount of pollution in the air coming through automobiles, then you would have reduced pollution by almost 80 per cent and life on earth will be safer. So there is now a tendency to move towards electric mobility, not only automobiles, even boats and trains. In advanced countries, the number of electric automobiles in use is on the increase.
Of course, many are now using what we call hybrid which is electric engine and fuel combustion engine together. This reduces the amount of fuel you burn. But the ultimate is electric automobile so that we can do away with pollution of the atmosphere. That is already gaining ground now in countries like the US and China. In China, electric bikes are common and a number of their taxis are electric. So very soon, electric mobility will take over from fuel combustion.
Electric car and power bike
“I started in 2005 to research into electric automobiles. Our electric automobile came on the road on July 1, 2010 and I have been using it but not continuously being the only one we have made, we don’t just use it any how. What we did was to buy a fuel combustion engine car, removed the engine and designed and assembled the electric engine inside it.
We have also advanced in the sense that the first one we did, we brought in the parts but between then and now, we have worked on two of the three major components which are the speed regulator and the charging system because after running about 70km, you charge for six hours continuously.
Today, we have successcfully designed and assembled our own speed controller. We have tested it by mounting it on a four-wheel cycle and it is moving very well. We have almost perfected the charging system. Of course, since September 2007, we have been able to come up with a charging system but it was not as efficient as what we have now. We are replacing the one we did in 2010 with the one we have now which is a lot faster and more reliable.
The only component we have not started to do here is the electric motor itself. But that is not a big deal because there is no vehicle company that manufactures all the parts. You get some parts from one company and then you design some,” said the professor of chemical engineering.
Ahead of many nations
“We have gone very far and I think we are ahead of many other nations. We are ahead of Australia because they are not yet making those things and they are the ones in the forefront of electric automobile. An Indian man that came for business in Abuja saw my programme on television and came all the way to look for us here.
He said he came because they also have interest in electric automobile and that his company was given approval by the Indian Government to start introducing electric mobility into their taxi system. By the time we talked, I found out that we are ahead of them. They don’t make any parts and yet, they have got to the point of changing their taxi system to electric automobiles but we have gone to the point of producing the controller and the charger,” he said.
What Nigeria must do
“Even as an oil-exporting country, we cannot help encouraging something that will not consume fuel for two reasons: One, we are not making even the fuel combustion vehicles, we are importing them so if in the next five or six years the whole world is changing into electric automobile, you say ‘oh we are not going to go into that,’ you will be forced to import the electric automobiles they are making and good enough, petroleum is not only used for fuel combustion by automobiles, there are hundreds of products today that are made from petroleum just that Nigeria is only focusing on exporting crude.
Our clothes are from petroleum. When you talk of petrochemicals, the basic raw material is petroleum. So all we need to do is for us to try to focus on petrochemicals and start to divert the crude we cannot export to produce other things that can be exported.
Of course we will still be selling our crude but not as much as before. This is one reason why we should not say we are not going to encourage electric automobile production. Two, for now, we are only importing vehicles, when you join the race of electric automobiles manufacturing; you become one of the countries that will be earning revenue from exporting your own electric automobiles.
So while the fuel is not used for fuelling cars again, generators for the charging the automobiles will still be using fuel . You will now join them in also exporting vehicles and so you can increase your revenue base more than what it was before. We have gone very far and I think we are among the top five countries,” he noted.
